Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Kolkata Police have apprehended a 20-year-old man for allegedly impersonating a police inspector from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) at Bhawani Bhawan, the headquarters of West Bengal Police. The accused, identified as Diptendu Bag from Malirdhar village in South 24 Parganas, was arrested today following a complaint filed at Entally Police Station. He is facing charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for cheating by personation and fraudulent acts.
The case, registered as Entally PS, includes charges under BNS sections 319(2) (cheating by personation), 204 (destruction of document or electronic record to prevent its production as evidence), 205 (false personation for purpose of act or proceeding in public servant), and 318(4) (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property). These sections reflect the seriousness of the fraud committed by the accused.
According to police reports, Diptendu Bag was found falsely identifying himself as Diptendu Bag, an Inspector of Police with the ATS, West Bengal Police. He was also allegedly wearing a police uniform fraudulently, using this guise to potentially cheat the public for some ulterior motive. His inability to provide any satisfactory answers regarding his identity and rank raised immediate suspicion among authorities.
A key detail that triggered doubt was his claim of being promoted to the rank of inspector in merely three years. Such a rapid promotion is highly unusual within police ranks, particularly to the position of inspector, which typically requires many more years of service and rigorous examination. This improbable claim further solidified the suspicion against him.
The Security Control Organization is currently interrogating Diptendu Bag to uncover the full extent of his activities. Investigators are trying to ascertain how long he has been impersonating an officer, whether he managed to defraud anyone, and if he had any accomplices in his deceptive scheme. The police are also looking into how he acquired the police uniform and other paraphernalia that allowed him to project the image of a genuine officer.
